Dental health tips
including cavities, decay or gum problems to name just a few. However, not many people realise
that poor dental hygiene can additionally have an impact on your overall health and well being. For
example, it is often the case that an inadequate oral hygiene affects your overall health through
periodontal diseases or gum infections. Such infections are usually the result of poor teeth brushing
or inadequate flossing. Bleeding gums or tooth decay are just a few symptoms present when an
infection develops. If the infection develops further, patients might loose their natural teeth. If that
is the case, then the only permanent dental restoration solutions available are either dental bridges
or dental implants. Missing teeth can affect the confidence and self-esteem.
A number of studies have shown that patients who suffer from gum disease or other infection
that has advanced into a serious stage (i.e. tooth loss), are also at a higher risk of developing other
serious health problems, including cardiovascular diseases or pneumonia. The studies have not
directly attributed poor oral health as a reason for developing other health problems, but have made
an observation of the correlation between the oral health and the overall health being. Diabetes is
another condition that affects your oral health. Patients with this condition should be particularly
hygiene are more likely to die from the effects of diabetes as compared with people who don't have
any such problems. This might be because of harmful bacteria from the diseased gums that can
enter the bloodstream. As diabetes leads to a weaker immune system, the body might struggle to
effectively ward off the bacteria and the infection caused by the gum disease.
Therefore it is vital to keep your oral health at a good standard so the chances of other health
complications or hefty dental bills are limited. You should be brushing at least twice a day for two to
three minutes each time, brushing in a circular motion and focusing on the gum line. The toothbrush
needs to be changed at least once every 12 weeks, as the bristles begin to wear down over time and
essentially become less effective. Flossing is also very important. Flossing helps to clean the areas
between the teeth, especially spots hard to get by a traditional brush. However, flossing needs to be
done gently as any damages and bleeding to your gums might bring about other infections. Seeing a
dentist regularly is yet another useful tip. Regular dental check-ups can help to identify the problems
before they turn into something much more serious.
