Orthodontic braces are commonly used in cosmetic dentistry to straighten uneven or crooked teeth
other cosmetic restoration methods such us porcelain veneers for quicker results. Dental braces are
more effective when placed at a younger age as this is when the teeth are still developing so they
are more adaptable. Having said that, braces are also successfully used in adults although types of
braces used and the duration of the treatment might differ.
Braces are applied onto the front of the teeth on each jaw. They are made from porcelain or plastic
composite, although some dentist would also use metal brackets. Once braces are in place, a
wire is installed through the teeth. The wire will be needed for tightening the teeth. It works by
applying pressure onto the teeth so they move to the desired place. With time, the wire will adjust
the teeth so they become straight. Although the pressure from the wire is minimal and doesn’t
harm the teeth, patient might feel certain discomfort when wearing braces, especially at the initial
stage. Patients will also need to visit an orthodontist every 4 to 8 weeks in order to the get the
wires tightened up. Control visits will make sure that the wires apply the right pressure onto the
teeth so they are moving in the right direction. Braces along with the wires will be removed at the
end of the treatment period. The duration of such treatment varies as each case is different. On
average though, the braces are worn for a period of about 12 months, although patients with severe
orthodontic problems will wear them for over 24 months. You local orthodontist specialist will be
able to assess your situation and propose the correct braces for your bite.
