NHS dentists are those who have agreed with their primary care trust to provide NHS dental services. Most of the dentists who provide NHS services also offer other treatments privately and if the patient is willing to cover the cost of treatment that is not covered by NHS (i.e. cosmetic dentistry), it will be done as private treatment. Dental services available on NHS are limited. Although NHS provide dental treatments that are necessary to keep your teeth healthy, all additional cosmetic and restoration dentistry such as veneers, porcelain bridges, teeth whitening or implants are excluded. In other words, the latest and the most practical dental solutions which guarantee the best aesthetic results are not available under NHS and patients who seek such treatments need to contact private clinic.
NHS dentists use basic dental materials, for example, only non-white fillings or metal braces are fitted, fully porcelain crowns or veneers used for so called ‘Hollywood Smile’ restoration are not available. NHS dentists’ costs are flat and are set by department of health. Prices of NHS treatments are much lower than in private clinics in the UK. For example, non-white filling costs £44.6 under NHS, compared with over £100 privately, root canal treatment £198 compared with £365 etc. However, as mentioned above, there are restrictions on number and types of treatments available materials used as well as waiting lists at NHS clinics are usually long.
