Dental crowns in steps:
The tooth is prepared and an impression taken. A crown is made from the impression and fitted to the tooth.

In order for a tooth to be crowned, the dentist prepares the tooth by cleaning it and removing any decay. The next stage is taking the impression of the tooth and giving it to the dental technician to fabricate. It takes between three to six working days for our laboratory technician to custom-produce your new crown. During this time, our dentist will fit you with a temporary crown to protect your prepared tooth Once fabricated, the crown is permanently cemented onto earlier prepared tooth.

Frequently Asked Questions on Crowns
When are crowns used?
Dental crowns are used for various reasons, mainly when the existing tooth is broken, weakened by a large filling or after an extensive infection. Porcelain crowns can also be used for cosmetic reasons.
How dentists prepare the tooth for a crown?
Dentist removes the outer surface of the tooth, leaving only the core of the tooth (which should be strong enough to support the crown). Then impression is taken and given to a laboratory where the crown is fabricated by the dental technician. Crowns are permanently attached to the remaining tooth using special dental cement, which also forms a seal to help hold it firmly in place.
Sometimes, root canal treatment is needed prior to placing a crown.
What materials are used to produce crowns?
Various materials or combinations of materials are used but the most popular are the following options:
Porcelain bonded to precious metal: Most popular crowns currently used. A precious metal base is covered by layers of porcelain.
Porcelain: Mainly used for front teeth in cosmetic dentistry. These are not as strong as bonded crowns but they look very natural.
Porcelain and composite: Look very natural but these crowns are not as strong as bonded metal crowns.
Precious metal (gold and palladium): these crowns are very strong and are used in cosmetic dentistry
Will crowns look different from other teeth?
No. Once crowns are permanently cemented, it is almost impossible to tell the difference between crowned and natural teeth. Dentists make sure that the shade of the neighbouring teeth matches that of the newly fabricated crown. Temporary crowns, which are applied in between treatments, might look slightly different from other teeth as these are made of plastic. However, as the name implies, temporary crowns are only fitted for a short period of time.
How many visits for the treatment to be completed?
Usually two separate visits are required: one for preparation and impression taking and the other one for fitting the crown and final adjustments. However, more visits might be required if there is an infection present in the area where the crown is to be fitted.
Is the treatment painful?
No. The treatment is performed under local anaesthesia.
When are post crown fitted?
Post crowns are used after the tooth has been root filled. Posts are usually made of stainless steel and are inserted into the root canal to give extra stability for a weakened tooth. Once inserted into the root canal, post firmly holds the crown in its place.
How long can a crown last?
As with any other dental solution or reconstruction, it hugely depends on how it is looked after. Well looked after crowns can last for decades and some dental clinics will even give some guarantee.
Will the crown feel different?
As the shape of the crown will be different from the shape of the original tooth, the crown might feel a bit different at first, although this feeling goes away after a few days. Dentists will be able to adjust the crown if it still feels uncomfortable after some time.
What is an alternative to a crown?
Dental veneers, inlays or onlays may be used as an alternative to having a crown although it depends on the individual condition.
