Travel info on Krakow for dental tourists
Poland’s ancient royal capital - Krakow - is third biggest city in the country but probably the most popular one. Unlike Warsaw, which was totally destroyed during Second World War, Krakow was largely undamaged. The city has been dubbed ‘the new Prague’ and it certainly lives up to this statement. Krakow is listed by UNESCO as one of the world's twelve most significant historic sites. The city is indeed a visual treat, with the Wawel being one of the most striking royal residences in Europe. Krakow is home to the largest medieval market square in Europe, dozens of museums and galleries and architecture spanning the last 800 years. The Old Town district of Kraków is home to about six thousand historic sites and more than two million works of art. Krakow is easy to get around by public transport and very pleasant to walk in. Trams and buses are cheap and straightforward. Numerous tourist offices sell multi-day passes that also give free access to museums.
Other atractions:
Auschwitz Concentration camp.
Auschwitz death camp is a terrifying reminder of the holocaust and Nazi’s brutality. Between June 1941 and January 1945 about one million men, women and children were murdered in three Auschwitz concentration camps – Auschwitz, Birkenau and Monowitz . At its peak the whole complex was a deadly prison to some 150,000 inmates that were being either murdered outright or starved and worked to death. The site is an hour’s drive away from Krakow and is visited by over half a million visitors every year. Admission to Auschwitz is free.
Wieliczka Salt Mine.
Wieliczka Salt Mine, located on the southeast outskirts of Krakow, is one of the world’s oldest operating salt mines, and it had been in constant operation (until 2007) since the 13th century. The mine remains the major tourist attraction in Poland and is visited by nearly 1.2 million people every year. The depth of the main is 327 meters and is over 300 km long. It features a 3.5-km tour for visitors and includes statues of historic and mythic figures made of rock salt. The amazing works in the mine have been sculpted either by miners or contemporary artists. The mine is a bigger and no doubt much more impressive Polish version of Madame Tussaud wax museum.
Zakopane and Tatra mountains.
Zakopane, known as ‘the winter capital of Poland’, lies in a large valley at the foot of the Tatra Mountains. The Tatra region is widely known for its unspoiled nature and picturesque landscapes. Zakopane guarantees a perfect rest throughout the year. Its hiking trails and ski slopes make it a tourism mecca for all seasons. Located only 1.5 hour drive away from Krakow it has become a popular destination for Polish and foreign tourists.
Medical Tourism to Poland
The dental tourism is a rapidly growing niche section of the travel & tourism industry, which is yet to be researched on the global scale. Poland, in recent years, has gained in popularity as a dental tourism destination for British people, as it offers quality and competitively priced treatments.
Medical tourism is a rapidly growing segment of the travel & tourism market that has had a significant influence on the health infrastructure of many developing countries. Although this niche of the travel industry has existed for many decades, it was only until very recently that the vision of going abroad for a medical treatment has become a reality for many. A combination of different factors has contributed to the recent increase in popularity of health tourism. The most important factor is the cost of getting a health service in the developing countries compared with the cost of the same in the developed nations. The ease and low cost of travel as well as a significant improvement of healthcare standards in many countries of the world are other reasons behind the popularity of medical tourism.
Some Eastern European countries have realized the potential that lies in health tourism and started promoting their medical services to more industrialized nations. The expansion of European Union in May 2004 by ten new members, mainly ex-communist states, was an important factor that has made cheap and reliable treatments possible for many Western European citizens. Poland was one of the countries that have gained popularity as the destination for medical and dental treatments after the accession to EU. Since then, many individuals and organizations have recognized it abroad as a provider of professional and low cost medical and dental services. Dental tourism in Eastern Europe is predicted to gain most in popularity as a favorite treatment amongst British and other Western Europeans. This is mainly because of the cost of such treatments, ease of travel and the fact that dentistry is one of the less invasive forms of medical tourism, unlike orthopaedic or neurosurgery. Therefore the decision process for many potential customers might be much simpler and quicker.
Dental Tourism in Poland and it's history
Poland might be of interest to anyone who wants to visit old cities, experience culture and breathtaking landscapes, varying from sea shores to mountains.
Poland is a country more than 1000 years old and is certainly an interesting place to visit by those with a taste for history. Cities such as Warsaw, Gdansk, Wroclaw or Krakow are famous for their castles, cathedrals and old cities, which are listed on UNESCO heritage sites. According to the second biggest tour operator in the US – Orbitz – Krakow is one of the seven mostly recommended cities to visit in the world in 2007, naming it the ‘New Prague’. Poland is also home to infamous concentration camps built during second World War by Nazis, with the mostly know Auschwitz - a brutal reminder of the holocaust.
The tourism infrastructure in Poland is rapidly developing to cater for more visitors every year. Hoteliers such as Radisson or Marriott are expanding their portfolio of hotels in Poland so are the budget airlines such as Easy Jet, Ryanair or Central Wings when it comes to the number of flights offered. This is because liberalisation of air traffic that followed Poland’s accession to the EU in May 2004 has led to a rapid increase of air passenger traffic in Poland and the country quickly emerged as one of fastest growing countries in the world in terms of air passenger traffic (25% increase to reach 11.5 million passengers in 2005, IATA).
Poland is one of the most typographically varied countries in Central and Eastern Europe. Those who love nature will certainly enjoy the variety of landscapes that can be found in Poland, whether they are sandy beaches of the Baltic in the north or rocky crags of the Tatras in the south. Cities on the Baltic coast have for years been divided between Poland and Germany and this has greatly influenced their current appearance. In the south, some other beautiful and wild mountain ranges such us Karkonosze, Beskides, Pieniny or Bieszczady can be found. According to PNTO those mountain ranges have lately become particularly attractive to Western Europeans, as there are not many such unique and unspoiled by human activities locations in Continental Europe. The Mazury Lake District in northeast Poland, known as ‘Land of thousand lakes’ with its picturesque villages and Malbork castle is also worth a visit.
The Mazurian stretch of lakes is particularly popular among families and nature lovers. Poland is also home for free roaming European bison - Europe’s largest animal. This very rare and endangered animal usually grazes in Bialowieska Forest National Park (WCMC, 1999). Different forms of recreations or sports are available in Poland. Baltic Coast and Lake District are popular among fans of water sports, such us windsurfing, kite surfing, sailing or kayaking whereas the mountain areas are often visited by hikers, cyclists as well as skiers and snowboarders in the winter.
Spas, once popular in Britain, have always played part in treating a variety of disorders in Poland. People have traveled to the waters for health as well as for social reasons since the medieval times. Spas are mainly located in the south of Poland, in Carpathian and Sudeten Mountains and at the Baltic Coast.
