Dental Implants in Poland

A dental implant is a titanium metal rod which is placed into the jawbone. It is used to support one or more false teeth. In practice, both the false teeth and their supporting rod are known as ‘implants’.

Dental implants stages:

1. A missing front tooth.
2. A hole is prepared in the jaw bone in stages.
3. An Implant is fitted and a healing cap inserted.
4. When the Implant has healed, the healing cap is exposed and an abutment inserted.
5. A crown is then fited to the abutment.

Advantages of Dental implants

- Implants are durable and long lasting solution to missing teeth. Nearly 90% of implants last over 15 years.

- Dental implants are more comfortable to maintain and use than bridges or dentures. The artificial tooth or set of teeth stay firmly in place once the treatment is completed.

- Teeth restored on implants look and feel as natural and healthy teeth. It’s almost impossible to tell the difference between the natural and the implant-restored tooth without an X-ray.

- The process of fitting dental implants doesn’t involve drilling the neighbouring teeth.

- Implants reduce the process of bone shrinkage which happens after the tooth has been lost.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are natural-looking replacements and longest lasting solution to missing teeth. They provide the similar function as your natural tooth root. Although nothing will be as good as your natural teeth, dental implants are simply closest to it.

There are many options to consider when replacing missing single tooth or multiple teeth and dental implants are one of the most common procedures. They are ideally suited for patients who have lost their teeth due to periodontal disease or an injury.

Dental Implants are more comfortable than conventional bridges and partial dentures. Additionally, they protect your other natural teeth as there is no need for drilling of neighbouring teeth as it might be the case with bridges. Implants can also prevent the shrinkage of the bone which happens after teeth have been missing for a longer period of time.

Considerations

Before implants are placed the dentist will have to assess the health of your gums and teeth. If there is any indication of gum disease or decay, these will have to be treated first. In some cases bone grafting might be necessary if there is not enough bone material to hold an implant.

The treatment

The reconstruction on dental implants usually consists of 2 stages:

Implant placements

The gum is cut and lifted and a small hole is drilled in the jawbone at the precise location of the intended implant. The titanium implant is fitted into the socket and the gum is stitched over the implant. Depending upon the complexity of your case, the operation might take anything from 30 minutes for a single implant, to several hours for complex bone grafting and multiple implant placements. About a week after the surgery stitches are removed.
Once the implant has been put in, it is left to heal and integrate with the jawbone for about three to six months. During this time patients are either given temporary bridge or continue to wear dentures

Abutment installation & Prosthetic restoration

The gum is opened again so the ‘connector’ called an abutment can be fitted into the implant. After about a week an impression of your jaws and implants are taken so your new set of teeth can be fabricated in the laboratory. Once this done, your newly constructed prosthesis is inserted onto an implant and final adjustments are made.

Success Rates

Dental implant success is related to operator skill, quality and quantity of the bone available. The general consensus of opinion is that implants carry a success rate of around 95%*. Please notice that the proven success rates at Dentist in Krakow’s clinics is over 99%

Things to consider before the treatment

- Cost of the treatment. Although dental implants are the longest lasting solution to missing teeth, it is also the most expensive method. Full cost of a replacement of a tooth using an implant in the UK (Implant+abutment+porcelain crown) is on average £2500. However, the cost of such restoration in Poland is around £1000

- Duration of treatment – Dental implant treatment is completed in stages and can take between 3 to 9 months. There are other ways to restore missing teeth (dental bridges, partial or full dentures) which can be completed in the matter of weeks

- Some patients might require other treatments before implants can be inserted (bone graft, sinus lift etc)

Dental implants questions.

How safe are dental implants?

Dental implants are regarded as safe and are probably the best and most advanced method to restore missing teeth. Before the treatment is carried out, dentists perform various tests to find out patients’ suitability. Success rate for implants insertion in best clinics is close to 100% and, once inserted, they can last for 20 years and more.

Is everyone suitable for implants?

Some patients might be rejected an implantology treatment on health grounds. If a patient has a significant bone loss, a bone graft treatment might be required before any implants are placed. Dentist will be able to assess suitability at the time of consultation.

Is the treatment painful?

Implantology treatment (insertion) is an operation although not so invasive. Usually it is performed under local anaesthesia so there is no pain at the time of the treatment. Some patients might feel pain after the treatment and this is mainly due to having stitches in place.

What is the duration of the treatment?

Duration of the implantology treatment depends on the individual conditions. It can take anything between 3 to 12 months to complete the treatment (from the moment of the implant insertion to attaching the false tooth or set of teeth). Generally, treatments performed on the lower jaw take less time to complete but treatment duration often depends on the complexity of the surgery as well as state of the bones where implants are attached to. After the surgery, the implants need to integrate with the bone, and only after 3 to 6 months the new crown or denture can be permanently fixed. In the meantime, patients can wear temporary crowns or dentures.

What happens if the implant becomes loose after treatment?

It is extremely rare that an implant becomes loose after the insertion but if it does happen, the dentist will remove it and the healing will continue in a normal way. Another implant can be placed once the jaw has healed.

How many missing teeth can be replaced with implants?

Implants are used for single or multi teeth restoration so they can virtually be used to replace every natural tooth. Dentists usually use 6 implants to restore all teeth in a jaw (using a bridge) so there is no need to have an implant for every single missing tooth in case of serious teeth reconstruction.

How to maintain implants?

False teeth on implants are cleaned and maintained in the same way as natural teeth. Dentist will show you the ways to clean the areas difficult to access with a toothbrush.

Are false teeth fixed permanently on implants?

Yes, most of the artificial teeth are attached permanently and can only be removed by a dentist. In case of some types of dentures or bridges, false teeth are removed by patients for cleaning.

How much do implants cost?

Implantology treatments are expensive. Cost of an implant insertion in Western Europe can be as high as 2000 EUR. However, cost of an implant insertion with Dentists in Poland starts from 550 EUR. Cheaper alternative to implants are dental bridges.

Where should I get the treatment?

General dentist should be able to help and refer you to a specialist. Some general dentist practitioners are qualified to perform implantology treatments.
