Dental treatment costs
Dental treatment costs in the UK and Ireland
In the UK, patients can obtain dental services from either public (NHS) or private dentists. Dental services and materials available on NHS are limited, especially when compared with the offering of the private sector. For example, better quality porcelain crowns or implants are only available in private clinics. This is also the case with porcelain veneers and composite fillings as these are treated as cosmetic dentistry and therefore are not available on NHS.
Dental fees at NHS clinics are set by the Department of Health. There are three types of charges that an NHS dentist applies. The maximum charge for the set of treatments cannot exceed £198 (valid from 1st April 2009). The three NHS charge bands are:
1: £16.50. This charge includes an examination and diagnosis
2: £45.60. It includes all the necessary treatment covered by the £16.50 charge, plus additional treatment, such as fillings (amalgam fillings only), root canal treatment or extractions
3: £198. The charge includes all the treatments covered by the £16.50 and £45.60 charges, plus more advanced treatments, such as crowns or dentures
After the consultation or initial treatment, an NHS dentist may refer a patient to a private dentist for another treatment (usually for more specialized procedure). In such case, the correct band charge for the treatment received under NHS still needs to be paid. Fees incurred as a result of the treatment in a private clinic needs to be settled separately by the patient. Certain groups of people might be eligible to receive free NHS dental treatment. It includes under-18 year olds, in full-time education, pregnant women and others. For full list please visit the NHS website.
Costs of dental treatments in private clinics in the UK are considerably higher when compared with the NHS fees. However, with higher cost come better quality of materials and wider range of services available. So called “Hollywood smile makeover” can only be achieved privately. Most of the NHS dentists also provide private dental services or know other dentists who offer private appointments. Dental costs in private clinics vary widely with the highest fees paid in London and the South East. Generally, clinics that have a good reputation and are located on the high street are more expensive. However, higher price between clinics is not always justified. It is advised that patients check the credentials and experience of dentists and compare prices with other clinics before they commit to a treatment.

In Ireland, Health Service Executive (HSE) provides free dental treatments through public health service, although only to certain groups of people. The priority is given to medical card holders and children referred by schools or child health service. Routine dental as well as emergency treatments are provided through HSE clinics and by private dentists on the HSE panel. In reality, waiting lists to see a HSE dentist are long and most patients opt in for private clinics. Prices for private dental services in Ireland are similar to those in the UK.
