Main reasons for travelling abroad to seek dental treatments.
Cost is the main reason for travelling abroad to obtain a dental treatment. There are huge discrepancies in costs of dentistry within the EU, and in some member states dental treatments cost much less than in others. For example, the average cost of a dental implant (titanium screw only) in Poland or Estonia is around £520, whereas the same implant costs over £1200 in the UK or Ireland. The cost comparison is very similar for other dental treatments. In some cases, the reason for travelling is the speed at which the treatment can be performed. Waiting lists on NHS are usually long and some people prefer to travel abroad to get necessary dental treatments where it can be done quicker.
Dentist charges at private clinics in Poland are among the lowest in the EU. Costs of dental treatments in Poland are often 70% lower than for similar treatments in other EU countries. This is due to the fact that labour costs are still very low in Poland when compared with other Western European states. GDP per capita in Poland is lower than in majority of EU countries, therefore private dentistry costs need to reflect it and be at reasonable levels so the local residents can afford treatments. The alternative to private sector is state supported dental care (equivalent of UK’s NHS), which usually provide free services although waiting lists are long. Additional reason for low cost dentistry in Poland is the fact that tertiary education (State Universities and Medical School) is still free in Poland, so that dentists do not need to offset their medical degree fees with higher charges at a later stage.
Lower costs do not mean poor quality. Since Poland become a full EU member in May 2004, Polish dental clinics adhere to strict EU laws, which regulate clinic’s standards, dentists’ liability and qualifications as well as health & safety standards. In other words, the same, high dentistry standards are expected in all EU states, be it UK, Sweden or Poland.
Costs of dentistry in Poland vary and depend on the location. Similarly to the UK, dentists charge higher fees in the biggest cities in Poland. In smaller towns and rural locations dentistry charges are usually lower. On the other hand, most of the dental specialists (often with doctorate or Phd degree) operate in main cities in Poland, where clinics offer wider range of dental treatments.
