All dentists who have successfully completed a dentistry course at University are awarded the title of general dentist. Although general dentists perform a wide range of dental treatments, they might not be qualified to undertake specialised dental work. A general dentist is the first point of contact in the maintenance, general health, preventative and restorative treatments for your teeth and gums. Treatments included in the general dentistry include check-ups, fillings and root canal work. The dentist will also be able to diagnose and treat oral infections such as gum disease, and may also perform tooth extractions.
A general dentist may undertake a specialist training in order to become one of the following dentist specialists:
Periodontist: They specializes in the prevention and treatment of periodontal diseases, and the surgical placement and long term maintenance of dental implants They also treat diseases of the soft tissue (gums) and bone that surround and support the teeth.
Endodontist: Deal with the tooth pulp and the tissues surrounding the root of a tooth.They perform root canal treatments and treat diseases of the pulp and nerves inside the tooth.
Prosthodontist: Diagnose, design, construct and fit replacement teeth, such as implants, bridgework and dentures (removable and permanent).
Oral Surgeon: Treat injuries and defects of the mouth and jaw. They often perform complex tooth extractions which include wisdom tooth removal, facial trauma, corrective jaw surgery, apicoectomy, bone grafts.
Oral Pathologist: Examine, identify, diagnose and treat diseases of the mouth, jaws, neck and face. Oral pathologists are often an important link in the diagnosis of conditions and illnesses; often using laboratory-based tests such as examining biopsies or samples.
Orthodontist: Orthodontists study and treat improper bites (malocclusions) which may be a result of tooth irregularity or disproportionate jaw. They design and apply corrective and supportive appliances (braces) to realign crooked teeth.
Pediatric: Dentist Care for infants, children, adolescents and special patients having psychological or emotional problems.
