More information on root canal treatments
The aim of the root canal treatment, also called endodontic therapy, is the elimination of the infection present in the roots of the tooth as well as protection from future infections. The treatment is required when the dental pulp in the tooth dies and, as a result, the tooth becomes infected (usually due to decay). A broken filling might also cause the infection in the pulp. If the treatment is not performed the infection will spread further, usually causing a lot of pain. Dentist performing a root canal treatment needs to open up the tooth and remove the infected pulp. Then the remaining root canal chamber is cleaned and enlarged so that it can easily be filled with a special material that will prevent future infections. Once the roots are cleaned, filled and secured your dentist might use a filling or a crown to protect and strengthen the tooth. The restored tooth should last for many years, providing that the good oral hygiene is maintained.
Endodontic therapy is a time consuming activity as each of the roots needs to be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before they are filled. Generally, more roots the tooth has the longer will the treatment last. Front teeth have usually one canal, premolars have two, and the back molars have three or even four canals. Endodontic therapy is one of the most feared dental treatments. However, modern root canal treatments are relatively pain-free because the pain can be controlled. The treatment is often performed under local anaesthetic but it is not necessary when the tooth is dead. Pain control medication might also be used before or after treatment.
Sometimes antibiotics are used in the therapy to prevent infections from going beyond the tooth. Antibiotics are also used at the beginning of the therapy in order to settle the infection before removal of the pulp commences. After the surgery the tooth will be dead, and if the infection spreads again then root end surgery might be required. An alternative to root canal treatment is a tooth extraction, although this option should be discussed with your dentist as prevention of patient’s natural teeth is always a priority.
