FAQ – Tray and Lamp teeth whitening.
How is it done?
A specially made dental tray is used to apply the whitening fluid onto the teeth surface. The whitening chemical (usually hydrogen peroxide) is activated using a combination of heat and light. With lamp whitening, the dentist applies a cover for the gums, which will protect them during the whitening process. The whitening chemical is then activated using a special whitening lamp.
How many visits are required?
For lamp teeth whitening usually one, an hour and a half long visit is required.
At least two visits are needed to complete a tray whitening treatment. At your first appointment the impression of your teeth is taken in order to fabricate a “tray” which will be used for applying the whitening product. Once the tray is ready, the patient continues to wear it at home for short periods of time for another 2 to 4 weeks. The dentist will check if the anticipated result is achieved at the end of the treatment. Some people find that their teeth are sensitive for the first few days after treatment, but this often wears off after a short while.
Why should I whiten my teeth?
All of us are different, so are our teeth. Some teeth have a yellowish tinge, some are more beige - very few are actually 'white'. Teeth are also easily stained while eating or drinking certain products. Bleaching or lamp whitening provides a relatively cheap and effective way of lightening the shade of your teeth so they look nicer and cleaner.
How white will my teeth be after the treatment?
Certainly whiter than they were before but the final result hugely depends on the original shade of the teeth. The results of teeth whitening last from 1 to 3 years, however, it depends on the way we treat our teeth and what food or drink we consume.
Are home kits any good?
Over the counter teeth whitening kits are not recommended by most dentists as they contain only a small amount of hydrogen peroxide which makes the product less effective. Some such products may contain mild acids while others are abrasive. Whitening is a complicated treatment procedure and should only be performed by a dentist once the teeth and gums have been thoroughly examined. Inappropriate use of home whitening kits can actually damage the enamel of your teeth.
Does whitening always work?
Whitening only lightens the existing colour of the tooth, it doesn’t change it. Whitening is only effective on the natural teeth. Veneers are recommended for patients with seriously stained or discoloured teeth. Your dentist will be able to advice.
How to clean my teeth after the treatment?
Your dentist will be able to advice on the best ways of maintaining your teeth after the treatment. Generally, a good oral hygiene and regular visits to a hygienist will help to maintain the whiter effect for longer.
Whitening toothpaste – does it work?
Whitening toothpaste helps to remove stains and therefore improves the natural colour so the teeth look whiter. However, it cannot change the natural colour of the tooth.
